Congratulations to Auto Vending on its 20th Anniversary in publishing – keeping us all up to date with the latest trends in the vending industry.

In this month’s issue I was pleased to see that The Save a Cup Recycling Company has opened its first dedicated waste sorting and bailing centre and has launched new schemes for recycling vending cups and other disposables. The new LOOP and LOOP Plus schemes will remove and recycle all drinks vending waste, not just cups. Waste collected from vending clients will be delivered to the new Save a Cup sorting centre which is staffed by people with disabilities and disadvantages for sorting into refined waste streams for recycling.

At a Nuffield Private Hospital recently I clocked the free water and hot beverage machines alongside the vending machines in the waiting area. If you think most people will go for at least a cup of water and or a hot drink in the 10/15 minutes waiting to see their consultant – without being pedantic on the maths – I am glad that I am not the one sorting through the recycling bins at the end of the week. The LOOP PLUS scheme is a scheme designed for clients who would prefer to have just one bin for cups, cans, bottles and other waste and hand over the sorting and separating to Save a Cup.

According to Waste Watch, recycling two glass bottles saves enough energy to boil water for five cups of tea. I got in touch with Save a Cup for some other juicy recycling facts so here goes on the stuff we really do need to care about:

•	Polystyrene can be recycled up to 20 times without any damage to its physical properties. It is very easily recycled – Plastics Europe.

•	Recycling plastics reduces landfill, oil use and energy use making for a more sustainable process than manufacture from virgin material.

•	52% of commercial and industrial waste was recycled or reused in England in 2009, up 10% on 2002/3 – Defra website.</P.

•	UK Recycling saves the 18 million tonnes of CO2 each year – the equivalent of taking 5 million cars off the road – RecycleNow.

• Save a Cup recycle over 100 tonnes of cups a year. It’s hard to say what a cup weighs but a safe guess would be that they collect more than 30 million cups each year.

That might sound like a lot of cups but about 2.5bn paper cups are disposed of each year and a similar volume of PS06 and PP05 cups are also disposed of and land filled. Save a Cup is really only starting to chip away at this volume!

Save a Cup provides the only scheme that actually recycles cups. Other recyclers collect them, but typically they are ignored in favour of premium materials like cans, PET and HDPE. Save a Cup recycles all of the cups it collects in a fully audited process. As a not for profit company the charges applied for the service are only to help cover the cost of running the scheme. You can sign up to join the scheme or encourage your clients to by going to www.saveacup.co.uk.

Size matters
Meanwhile over at International Paper Foodservice they are urging vending operators to consider changing the existing 7 oz. plastic cup to an 8 oz size paper cup in line with the high street offering. 12 oz is already out there but it makes sense to go the extra and also in cup quality to enhance the coffee experience. This makes good business sense in my opinion and I believe that the changeover (according to Mike Gardner, sales and marketing director) is quite straight forward as their 8oz paper cup has a 73mm diameter so can be used in the 7oz Squat cup units without the need for splitter modifications. I am no expert in this field so I suggest you give Mike a call talk to your current vending operator if you want to join the cup size ‘revolution’.

What’s in a name – £££
With the Coffee Nation self-service coffee kiosks being rebranded as Costa Express the power of a successful brand is yet again evident with the company seeing an increase already by 30% since the change in branding. Well, you can’t go wrong with a cup of Costa can you but what is so interesting for marketers like me is that once you create a strong and successful brand – creating a sub brand that becomes just as strong is a moment to savour. Just by adding the word Express – the customer knows already what to expect – quality coffee on the go – brilliant. I wonder how many food and drink suppliers in the UK could replicate this brand within a brand adding value for both consumers and retailers?

Paper cups become a work of art
I bet no one in the industry has come up with such a novel way of storing cups as Sculptor Will Nash and students from a school in Brighton. Working on an educational Mathematical project – Will got students working out their sums using paper cups and I don’t know about you but I think what they created was amazing! My photos were taken when the installations were hung to be admired in the foyer of the Brighton University Sallis Benney Theatre Building. Nash works with schools, corporates and the public sector at creating sculptures for public spaces www.willnash.co.uk.

With the ever increasing demand for speciality coffees in the self service arena the coffee experience is as much about how the coffee is served up as in the taste of the coffee itself. Get the blend right and you will serve up the perfect coffee for your customers. Douwe Egberts & Tastemodern have teamed up to present four new coffee station designs for serving fresh coffee products available from the Douwe Egberts coffee range.

The Douwe Egberts branded Island Range – three beverage station designs to suit both a corporate and retail environment offering tariff boards, waste disposal and storage solutions. The forth model is a fully branded self service Kiosk which is ideal for corporate workspaces, public spaces and that of institutions such as universities that require coin operated payment functions.

When NHBC decided to provide visitors with a cashless system card and provide a one stop shop with building information incorporating a cash loader and free standing plasma screen, the Tastemodern team created a free standing unit housing plasma screen and cash loader into a neat surround in keeping with the style and finish of a previous unit installed late 2009. A concealed draw was built for the plasma screen keyboard to allow reception staff make the necessary information changes and access at the back of the unit was created with a lockable door to ensure that any IT equipment could be quickly dealt with.

With the closure of the on site staff restaurant. Britannia Refined Metal was sensitive to the needs of their employees and turned to Tastemodern to help with designing a stylish vending surround solution. The brief was that the vending machines were required to be integrated as part of a self service area, all built as part of a refurbishment programme to refresh the dining room and facilities. The design team were asked to incorporate a blue finish within design of the vending zone.

From a practical point of view the new dining room, zone design includes a dishwasher, dispensing unit, microwave and tray dispensing unit and a sink. A breakfast bar completed the area with ample storage in the low level cupboard space provided and new built in waste disposal units were built in to avoid the clutter of multi coloured bins to collect and recycle waste. The finish in ivory cream with soft warm grey worktops complimented the blue finish. A touch of brushed aluminium within the vending surround design emphasised the lines to ensure that the Britannia Refined Metal new dining area pushed all the right buttons from its installation in September 2010.

In open plan offices and corridors, over flowing bins of plastic cups beside vending machines can be unsightly if not emptied regularly. Whilst improvements have been made with waste management, office workers and visitors discard...

In open plan offices and corridors, over flowing bins of plastic cups beside vending machines can be unsightly if not emptied regularly. Whilst improvements have been made with waste management, office workers and visitors discard cups into normal waste bins which is not environmentally friendly and can create safety issues with drinks spillage. This in the long term results in increased cleaning and potential hazards with slips and falls.

Well planned vending zones if managed well provide an ideal solution to refreshments, hot or cold snacks for staff and visitors alike which is cost effective, quick and simple to manage. The key to making any vending solution work for you is to plan ahead the needs of your organisation so that you can choose the right vending machine services.

Assessing needs

The first thing to do is to think about how many people are going to use the machine(s) on a daily basis 24/7 and the hours in which it will receive its heaviest use. You then need to consider if the vending machine is to provide hot and cold drinks only or if you want snacks like crisps and chocolate or hot food options which is often welcome by those that work on night shifts.

The next consideration is where you place your vending machines and how many you think you will need. This will depend on the number of people and the number of floors in your building. The whole idea about vending is convenience so placing machines within easy reach of people is essential particularly for short break times. You may decide to place different machines in different areas so for example the hot food options in a machine in the kitchen whilst cold drinks and snack vending machines in the lobby or main corridors and break out areas.

Waste disposal management

Once you have selected your vending machine(s) the next thing to do is decide how the waste will be managed. Whether the waste will consist of cups or packaging from food items and if the packaging is considered general waste or recyclable, you may need a separate waste bin for plastic bottles and one for cups. You will need to weigh up the space you have for placing bin units against what variations you need (dependent on your waste). Do your bins require a cover or lid, or can the vending provider/operator provide a suitable waste management solution?

The solutions

Purpose built

With so many different vending machines on the market of varying sizes and shapes one solution that is becoming more popular is to house vending machines in purpose built surrounds which are custom made and can include built in storage and litter bin units. The benefit of this being that all waste is managed in one area by your vending machines. No unsightly bins and waste materials overflowing from the top and your vending area always presents well, is tidy, making your open office areas, corridors or atrium a more attractive space altogether.

Save a Cup

Save a Cup is a not-for-profit Company funded and supported by the vending and catering industry to provide a free collection and recycling service to users of plastic vending cups. These cups are then recycled and made in to pens, rulers and a variety of other useful products reducing the amount of waste plastic sent to landfill. Additional Benefits of the Save a Cup scheme include the reduction of mess in the workplace by encouraging people to dispose of their vending cup in the appropriate cup bins. This also reduces your requirement for waste disposal services, saving you money. www.save-a-cup.co.uk.

It is best to have a cleaning rota in place with the cleaning staff or contractor, visiting the vending area regularly checking the bins. Clean and empty daily, preferably at the start of the day and throughout. Find out when rubbish is collected from your offices by the council or waste disposal company and also which days the recycled waste is collected. Don’t forget to allocate a suitable storage space for waste once removed from the vending areas.

Speak to your vending contractor, they may offer you maintenance contracts.

Vending surround design specialists Vendinghousings were faced with an interesting design challenge – to make a vending surround look innovative and interesting in an architects dream building combining work space, meeting rooms and open spaces all in and around an atrium.

The area offered no walls to build from, and with the vending surround potentially seen from all angles it became an important consideration for the final design. The brief was to house and incorporate two vending machines, a counter top area for a water machine, a plasma screen and cash loader including a lockable side access door to the back of the vending surround.

What was imperative looking at the scope of the project was how the area was currently being used and how a vending solution could enhance the lives of the NHBC employees and create a positive impact that suited the environment.

“My initial thoughts were to create a kiosk style banking complete with its own roof. I also believed that the overall design needed to stand alone as a separate entity where people could agree to meet and feel comfortable enough in the seating area to relax during coffee breaks or hold casual meetings. I wanted the area to look exciting and compliment the overall architecture, commented Marcell but it also needed to provide a practical solution. I noticed that people stuck notices with blue tac on the original unit so it became apparent that the area was used for communicating messages so I worked on building a notice area into the overall finish that looked smart, easy to use and be seen by those passing by.”

The end product is now a hub of activity with the kiosk and seating area making this a designated area to enjoy with soft low voltage lighting creating mood and a welcoming feeling.

Mark Tonk, Sales Director at Vendcare said: “We are delighted with the end result and at how well Marcell and the design team interpreted our brief and understood the needs of our client, which is not something you can always put on paper but is more something you have to experience. We were particularly pleased with the attention to detail and the importance given to getting the right finish. This has been an excellent working partnership between Vendinghousings and Vendcare.”

When Marcell Rizza, Director of Taste Modern Ltd commissioned a Christmas card designed exclusively for www.vendinghousings.co.uk he had no idea that the card would create such a positive reaction. “I was surprised to receive so many telephone calls immediately after the mailing and I was delighted to hear from those within the facility management and vending industry how much it amused them – it was a true reflection on the Christmas spirit.”

One company however went that bit further – Mike Harding, CEO at Maxebar. enjoyed the seasonal greeting so much that he asked the team at Vendinghousings to come up with a design solution for his client at the Swisshotel in Amsterdam.

“Coming up with a design for an individual machine can be more difficult than designing a whole vending breakout area with a range of application’ said Marcell. “The other challenge in designing solutions for hotels is that often vending machines are located in corridors and tight spaces but more importantly getting the vending surround to fit in with the Hotel design and architecture is imperative.”

Our client was keen on having a contemporary surround that included aluminium. The end product is a blend and mixture of brushed aluminium features and a white patterned finish including curves and lines to the side panels. To create interest and a distinct look to make the surround design come to life, LED strip lights were added to the back on each front section and on either side of the header giving the vending area an impressive new look.

The other challenge was having the surround made in the UK and then each component wrapped safely ready to be shipped to Amsterdam, arriving intact ready for installation.

“We are delighted with the end result, I love it, said Mike Harding. “The concern for us was that the LED lights would not get broken in transit and that we would be able to get the vending machine and surround ready from day one without any last minute hitches. The team from Vendinghousings did a fantastic job and Marcell thought through every aspects from design to shipment, making the project a hassle free experience for me.”
